It’s a Florida Thing

Barbara on Jun 26th 2010

The other day I was browsing twitter and one of my friends asked if anyone spoke Spanish. I replied to her message saying I knew a ton of people that did and I would be able to help her translate some phrases. She sent me over the phrases, which I forwarded on to a Spanish speaking friend, and within a few hours she had what she needed.

At first, I was shocked she knew no one that spoke Spanish since I could easily name 10 people off the top of my head that are fluent in the language. Then I realized that this is more than likely one of those “Florida things”. There’s a lot of transplants in Florida. More than likely if you meet someone that lives here, they came from somewhere else. While a lot of people come from the northern states (NY, NJ, CT), there’s also a shitload of people that come from other countries, most of which speak Spanish.

Every area is known for something. When I lived in south Jersey it was things like Wawa and cheesesteaks. I think the only person I knew that spoke Spanish was my high school Spanish teacher. Living here, NOT speaking Spanish is almost a disadvantage. Along with Disney World and hurricanes, I think it’s safe to say that Florida is also known for the high amount of Spanish speaking people.

What are some things your area is known for?

Cheer up Keanu Reeves

Barbara on Jun 14th 2010

For once, the internet has actually gotten together to do something besides bash people or show their inappropriate body parts.

Keanu Reeves has has a pretty rough life. He lost his best friend, River Phoenix, his girlfriend gave birth to a stillborn baby, his sister has leukemia and some crazy lady was claiming that he fathered her 4 adult kids. The dude’s had it pretty rough and understandably, he’s had a case of the sads for quite some time. So the internet decided to cheer him up by creating this website.

The “official” Cheer up Keanu day is tomorrow. Write him a letter, send him a virtual hug, or draw him a picture:

Keanu taught us to be excellent to each other, so let’s be excellent to him! And party on dude!

Small World

Barbara on Apr 20th 2010

Tonight I had dinner with an old high school friend who I haven’t seen since I graduated (back in 2001!). It just so happens that she lives 5 minutes away from where I work. We’d been talking on Facebook for awhile now and decided to get together to catch up.

It’s wild how much things change over the years. You don’t see the people that you were once so close with anymore. A lot of my high school friends are married with children. They have jobs, houses and responsibilities other than taking care of themselves.

We spent a few hours sipping margaritas and talking about old friends, work (she is a first grade teacher), our families and living in Florida. Although we’ve chosen very different career paths, our lives are similar. Not married, no children and enjoying each day as it comes. With so many of my friends living completely opposite lives as me, it’s nice to know that I still have a few that are going down a similar path. I hope to get together again soon.
